Little Chick was just an egg when Mommy cat, who can't have kittens of her own, adopted him from a hen with too many chicks to feed. After he hatches, he thinks he is a cat like everyone around him. Mommy lets him know his “real” mother was a hen and promises to teach Chick everything he needs to know. Some of the neighborhood cats are a little too interested in Chick, but Mommy keeps him safe. When the other cats stare, Mommy tells him it’s because their family is different; Chick thinks being like everyone else would be boring. When he goes to bird school, his classmates ask many questions, like is it true his Mommy can't fly? And does she really have a long tail? Chick has all the answers thanks to his Mommy cat. He thinks he has the best family in the world! Spanish poet and author Zafrilla and Argentine illustrator Hilb have crafted an excellent piece of bibliotherapy for adopted children. The bright, colored-pencil illustrations of pudgy chicks and cats add exuberance to the simply and wryly told tale. Works equally well at promoting acceptance of differences and as a general read-aloud.

Este libro cuenta la historia de una gata que adopta a un pollito y de cómo este hijo explica para si mismo y para los demás la relación construída en base a las diferencias con su mamá.
Está muy bien construído el relato, desde un lugar muy respetuoso por el tema de la adopción y me gustó que sea el pollito el que cuente la experiencia de ser un “hijo del corazón”, naturalizando un lazo por elección como solo un chico puede hacerlo.
También me gustó la simplicidad con que están explicadas las diferencias físicas entre su mamá gata y él, sin mostrar traumas de ningún tipo por ello.
Finalmente el cuento también menciona la importancia de que el pollito siga en contacto con su naturaleza de ave, por lo que la mamá gata lo manda a una escuela de pollos a pesar que no es cerca de su casa. Esto me recordó a los libros de Fujimini Adventures que reseñé hace un tiempo donde se pretendía dar un mensaje similar pero con resultados mucho menos efectivos.
Es un libro genial para padres con hijos adoptivos (o para familias que quieran introducir el tema por algún medio), para docentes y psicopedagogos que deban abordar el tema de los diferentes tipos de familias en las escuelas, y por supuesto para psicólogos que atiendan pacientes que necesiten trabajar con esta temática.
Las bellísimas ilustraciones a lápiz del libro pertenecen a la argentina Nora Hilb.
